Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive modality that has been shown to provide fast, long-lasting relief for chronic pain conditions. Shockwaves are high energy sound waves that are directed into the body using a special probe. The energy within the shockwaves is then absorbed by the body, causing release of growth factors, reducing inflammation and swelling, and stimulating the body’s own healing process.
Dogs with chronic pain conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon/ligament injuries, bone fractures, back pain, and shoulder Instability are all candidates for shockwave therapy. Because shockwave therapy is non invasive it can be used as an alternative to surgery, a way to reduce or avoid the use of non-steroidal pharmaceuticals, or as part of a multimodal rehabilitation program.
Shockwaves stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms, and this process takes time. Your pet should be allowed to rest during the first few days after treatment, and should not be allowed any strenuous or high impact activity even if they appear to be feeling better. For many dogs, one treatment is sufficient, but if the condition being treated is severe and there is a partial response to the first treatment then a second or third treatment can be performed.
There are no known side effects to having shockwave therapy, however in the days following treatment, you may see swelling and redness in the treated area. This is a normal part of the healing process, and will subside within a day or two.
